trippin out

I have quite a fancy for Tim Burton films. There's always an eerily magical and fantastically trippy aura about his sets and characters. I'm still naively lured by anything fairy tale-esque, and that man can tickle my inner child while satisfying that unmentionable curiosity for the occult. It all started with Edward Scissorhands...that was an epic spin on the beauty ditches hot guy for sensitive beast plot. Forever will I respect Avon ladies. I swear in all of his movies there's a scene where you pan out slowly and see this giant, forbidding mansion/factory looming over a happy little town. So good. Big Fish, among others, was amazing too. I think the element of fantasy in that movie lies in Ewan's McGregor's optimism, even more than the giants and circus oddities. And now there's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a film I have been aching to see since I first saw it advertised on an internet popup ad. I finally got my chance yesterday, opening day.

I still remember how during our F-unit truth or dare rounds during the last night of school, I was asked to describe my deepest sexual fantasy. Because I don't normally devote volumes of time to concocting the details of such a topic, I somehow came up with an answer involving the likes of:

Hey, chocolate is an aphrodisiac, right? jk

The movie was impressive, but wasn't quite as satisfying as I had anticipated. There was more closure in this version compared to the original one, but there wasn't enough suspense buildup...big plot points just happened. Boom, Charlie found the golden ticket. Also, there was a little to much gender-bending in terms of Willy Wonka's character. My friend Max asked me if I was going to see the movie high, and now I kinda understand why. It would be the most psychedelic expericence, especially since all the oompa loompas were played by the same man. Downright TRIPPPPPPY. It would've been even wierder to see it in IMAX.

Aside from that, good day of teaching ESL today. I so tough teaching pronunciation to beginners who don't know pingying (phonetics). I have to find Chinese words that sound like the english letters to help teach them the sounds, but that doesn't work with words w/ v, or sh, or th. "Sank you bery muc teecha!" they say.
My afternoon class is full of superstars though. They rock at grammar and we whizzed through the lesson plan. Tomorrow I get my class of old Shangainese couples. They're the shiz.

Yay, shindig at 45 tonite.

Boo, I lost a boggle die...my roommates are gonna kill me.
